Q) What sort of problems do you treat?
A) Physiotherapy is primarily concerned with treatment of problems that arise from the musculoskeletal system. This system is comprised of muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones or joints. If such structures are injured or diseased they tend to cause a range of symptoms such as pain, stiffness or weakness in the body region affected. Physiotherapy can help with your problem if it is caused by something sudden like a sports injury or a road traffic accident. Physiotherapy can also help when damage has occured over a period of time, for instance work-related neck or upper limb pain. Physiotherapy is also very beneficial in the management of arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
Sometimes dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system occurs after damage to the nervous system which controls it. This can occur in conditions such as Parkinson's disease, stroke or multiple sclerosis. Physiotherapy will help with pain, weakness and poor co-ordination associated with such conditions. |
Q) How many treatment sessions on average are required?
A) This really depends on the diagnosis and the type of problem you present with. In general, if a soft tissue injury is of sudden onset, such as a pulled muscle, 4 - 6 treatments would be required, usually over a 6 week period.
If however, you have had the pain for a number of years, we will wish to identify the cause of the pain and also the reason why it has persisted for so long. It is more likely that treatment for this sort of problem would take about 10 treatments over a period of 6 - 10 months.
our physiotherapist will explain to you what exactly is going on with your particular problem, then you can decide what is the best treatment regime for you, both in duration and frequency. |
